I believe that Trust and Transparency are the core elements of building great relationships in the workplace.  Being transparent, however, about who we truly are as individuals and professionals…our strengths, flaws, aspirations…makes us feel vulnerable.

Some leaders say that people must first earn their trust before they are willing to share sensitive information.  In other words, transparency follows trust.  I believe the opposite is true.  As leaders, we earn the trust and respect of people around us by being transparent.

Are there risks in being too transparent?  Of course, there are.  The impact of those risks, however, is far less than the risks of building relationships on something other than trust.

Be intentional about it…
