The people in my organization both intimidate and inspire me. Every person is wicked smart, motivated, and exceptional at what they do. The thought of leading such an accomplished group is occasionally unsettling. At the same time, I am inspired every day to become the best leader possible. I owe them that much and more.
All too often, we see leaders pass on outstanding candidates because of pride, insecurity, or political survival. The thought of bringing someone onto their team who might be more talented is more than they can bear. This ill-advised “never hire your successor” approach ultimately results in a race to the bottom in terms of performance.
If I am not hiring and promoting individuals who are more capable than me of leading our organization, then I am failing my company, my team, and myself. Be bold…surround yourself with incredible people and be inspired to keep up with them.
Be intentional about it…
