“Following” is “Advanced Leadership”. It is a concept I struggle with occasionally. The day before an extended vacation, my colleague came to me and said, “Enjoy your vacation. We got this!” My insecure side screamed, “No, you need me!” But I knew she was right. In truth, I would follow this team anywhere.
Letting go and following your team can be much more challenging than leading them. If however, you have selected and promoted people more capable than you, the impact of doing so can be huge. Following the people who report to you is not abdicating leadership. It is empowering others to lead and represents the sincerest form of trust.
I am grateful for the opportunity to follow the leaders in my company. Each of them is exceptional and, together, they are unstoppable. It is an honor and privilege to count them among my colleagues and friends. Happy Thanksgiving.
