Certain rocks, when put under pressure, become diamonds. A similar amount of pressure applied to other rocks creates gravel. The same is true for leaders. Some leaders rise to the challenge and sparkle when facing the most difficult of circumstances. Others simply crumble under the pressure and spotlight.
In my experience, the leaders who shine have three things in common. First, they possess a high degree of emotional intelligence. They understand themselves, the people around them and they demonstrate great situational awareness. Second, they live their core values every day…without compromise. And third, they are authentic. These leaders understand the importance of being themselves instead of trying to be someone they are not.
We often hear things like intellect, drive and political savvy as being key ingredients of great leaders and star performers. While all of these are important, I believe that authentic and consistent leaders will win the day. Not only do their managers come to depend on them during both good and challenging times but, more importantly, so do the people who report to them. Everyone is attracted to a diamond.
Be intentional about it…
