As a leader, I believe one of my most important duties is to create a safe environment where employees can thrive. If people don’t feel safe they will not push the envelope, be vulnerable, take risks, get edgy, engage in critical conversations, be creative, have FUN, celebrate with each other, or display the requisite level of trust.
A safe environment is not, however, one without responsibility and accountability. On the contrary, my experience tells me that employees will shoulder more responsibility, elevate their standards for performance, hold themselves accountable and call out others who do not.
The people of my organization represent the only competitive advantage I have to offer our clients. If they cannot bring their very best, every day, without fear, then I have little to offer. The least I can do is provide a safe place for this exceptional group of professionals to shine…and thank them for their contributions, support and friendship.
Be intentional about it…
