“Always put the professional and emotional needs of your people before your own.” In times of uncertainty, individuals make adjustments in an effort to feel more comfortable. Leaders are no different and sometimes they allow themselves to believe that if they feel safe then their team will too. That, however, is not necessarily the case.
A leader’s job is not to make himself comfortable. A leader’s responsibility is to create a safe work environment…one that supports the professional and emotional well-being of his people. Knowing that your employees are able to bring their very best, every day will far outweigh any lack of comfort you may experience.
As leaders, we need our people operating at peak performance during tumultuous times. It is the surest way to find our way through uncharted waters. And don’t worry if you feel a bit unsteady at times. Rest assured that the people you have been looking out for along the way are also looking out for you with equal care.
